International Training on Participatory Forest Management

Building inclusive, collaborative and sustainable forest management systems with African experience.

Course Background

Participatory Forest Management (PFM) recognizes that sustainable forest management
requires the active involvement of multiple stakeholders in planning, implementation,
monitoring and evaluation. While widely promoted, effective implementation of PFM
requires specific skills, tools and institutional understanding.

ECAS Institute emphasizes the importance of stakeholder engagement, mutual analysis
and policy reflection as foundations for sustainable forest governance. This training
equips participants with both theoretical and practical competencies in PFM,
drawing strongly on African experiences.

Course Objectives

Understand principles of participation in forest management, with critical analysis of African solutions.

Apply participatory planning methods such as the Logical Framework Approach.

Observe and understand implementation of PFM through African case studies.

Gain practical knowledge of monitoring and evaluation tools including SWOT analysis.

Duration and Program

This is an intensive 10-day training workshop combining six days of theory and group work
with a full-day field excursion. Participants will visit forestry institutions and forest
sites across diverse Kenyan landscapes. Detailed schedules and itineraries will be shared
prior to commencement.

Training Style
