The ECAS Training Institute

The Environmental Capacity and Sustainability Institute (ECAS Institute) makes environmental law and policy work for people, places and the planet. We work with stakeholders across institutions, international bodies, academia, civil society and industry, and our team of environmentalists, researchers and policymakers to build capacity based on research evidence and policy insight. We are a not-for-profit organization with over 6 years of experience committed to advancing impact-driven environmental and sustainability law and policy across East Africa and the world.

Since 2017, ECAS Institute has played a pivotal role in shaping the fields of environmental law, and policy, both domestically and in the region. We are an internationally recognized, non-partisan capacity building, research and education center working to strengthen environmental protection by improving law, policy and governance worldwide.

We deliver insightful and impartial analyses to opinion makers, including government agencies, businesses, academics, NGOs, communities and journalists. We provide a common ground for debate and dialogue on important environmental issues.

He is the founder and CEO of the Environmental Capacity and Sustainability Institute (ECAS) based in Nairobi, Kenya. He is an experienced environmentalist with expertise in Climate Change Consulting, Environmental Governance, Policy Analysis, Green Economy, Sustainability Research, Stakeholder Liaison, Event Coordination, and People Management.
Over 7 years, he has influenced environmental decisions at county, national, regional, and international levels. Currently a researcher at the University of Nairobi, he previously held roles at the Office of the Climate Envoy, the Executive Office of the President-Kenya as the Climate Advisor, Council of Governors, National Forest Program Secretariat, WWF, and the Mother Earth Network.
Jacob has served in various leadership positions including Secretary of the Water Thematic Group of the Kenya Climate Change Working Group, Vice President of EBAFOSA-Kenya, and board member of the Kenya Forestry Working Group.

What We Do

As an institution, in this expansion journey the main goal is to continue to fill the KNOWLEDGE, DATA, CAPACITIES, POLICY and SKILL GAPS through targeted training in the environment space. With focus on emerging trends in the climate, energy and environment thematic areas, The ECAS Institute, seeks to remain as a conduit for capacity building, knowledge and data Gap Bridge for Governments, research institutions, businesses, companies, NGO, civil society organizations, and the community at large. The training theme as on one of the foundational pillars of the organization will work in tandem with the other three to create perfect knowledge synergy aimed at answering these questions. Further this, we seek out partnership aimed at funding such capacity building and policy advisory trainings for a bottom up approach, starting at the grass root into the national space and even the International environmental sphere. ECAS Institute continues to have a long-standing record of accomplishment in designing, implementing and facilitating Environmental, Capacity building, data dissemination and Policy advisory Training program. All these focus on answering the emerging environmental questions in accordance with globally acknowledged policies and agreements like the Nationally Determined Contributions, the 17 United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and the founding Paris Agreement for global temperature reduction, among others.

Trainings

The training services department was set up to address the growing need due to the rapid changes in management and leadership trends in Kenya, the East African region and globally. Of great focus is: Across Kenya and the region, we teach, train, and coach individuals, groups, companies, businesses, and institutions about law, policy, procedures, strategists, and their roles in development and business growth. We are focused on critical topics in domestic and international human resource practices, environment, climate change, and energy laws and policies and inform communities dependent on natural resources on how to contribute and benefit from forests, land, and natural resource protection and conservation. We educate thousands of professionals each year in Africa, with the conviction that more skilled professionals result in better environmental, program, and business outcomes. The ultimate goal is to help individuals, institutions and companies/businesses improve the implementation of business and environmental laws, policies, and strategies.

The Institute has the ability to organize and host specialized training courses due to its existing infrastructure, manpower, and collaboration with other institutions both locally, regionally, and internationally. It offers regular courses and tailor-made courses depending on the training needs. Courses can be offered either in Swahili, English, French, or German languages. The Institute conducts regular syllabus reviews for all its courses to ensure that they remain relevant and also embrace emerging technological changes and advancements. We employ the competency-based training approach guided by post-course evaluation and market demands. We also host training forums create an avenue through which participants share ideas, exchange views and learn from the experiences of peers.

Research

The research program seeks to bridge the gap and strengthen the nexus between research- policy- practices. We focus on specific themes and methodological issues such as assessments, and sustainability across such sectors as climate change, waste, agriculture, energy, forestry, water and blue economy, industry and circular economy, and chemicals and pollution.

We undertake research to fill the gap in collective understanding and inform decisions on the most critical policy and project decisions of the day, from climate change, circular economy, energy, water, agriculture, forestry, land, and humanitarian sectors to researching business strategies, regulations, and technologies. To ensure better-informed policy and business decisions we also disseminate research findings and cutting-edge proposals to cultivate better development and business solutions.

We also conduct internal research and external research aimed at driving Institutional excellence and Competitiveness. The Unit leads the Institute’s research activities, developing processes, selecting and analyzing appropriate data & information, and administering a scientific approach to data gathering, consolidation, and dissemination of research findings.
