INTERNATIONAL TRAINING ON INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICT) FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
COURSE BACKGROUND
In the 21st century, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have transcended their traditional roles to become powerful enablers of sustainable development. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognize the transformative potential of digital technologies to address complex global challenges, from poverty alleviation and health improvement to environmental protection and good governance. ICTs facilitate unprecedented data collection, analysis, and dissemination, enhance communication and connectivity, enable smart resource management, and empower individuals and communities. However, leveraging ICTs effectively for sustainability requires a strategic understanding of their diverse applications, potential impacts, and the underlying digital infrastructure and policy environments. This course aims to unlock that potential.
ECAS Institute offers this “Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for Sustainable Development” course to equip development professionals, policymakers, researchers, and community leaders with the knowledge and skills to strategically integrate ICTs into sustainable development initiatives. This program will explore how digital tools can accelerate progress across economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability, fostering innovation and resilience in a rapidly digitalizing world.
COURSE OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the interconnections between ICTs and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Identify and articulate the diverse applications of ICTs across the economic, social, and environmental pillars of sustainable development.
- Analyze how specific ICT tools and platforms can enhance efficiency, transparency, and participation in development initiatives.
- Evaluate the opportunities and challenges of deploying ICTs in various development contexts, including digital divides and ethical considerations.
- Develop a strategic perspective on integrating ICT solutions into development programs and policies.
- Explore real-world case studies and best practices of successful ICT for development (ICT4D) initiatives.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
This course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the strategic role of Information and Communication Technologies in achieving sustainable development. You will learn to:
- Identify how mobile technology, internet connectivity, and digital platforms facilitate economic inclusion, education, and access to services.
- Understand the power of Big Data, AI, and IoT in monitoring development progress, optimizing resource allocation, and predicting future trends.
- Explore GIS and remote sensing applications for sustainable land management, urban planning, and environmental monitoring.
- Analyze the role of e-governance and digital public services in promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen participation.
- Assess the socio-economic and environmental impacts of ICT adoption in developing contexts, including both benefits and potential pitfalls.
- Formulate strategies for bridging the digital divide and ensuring equitable access to ICTs for all segments of society.
- Examine successful ICT4D initiatives from around the globe, drawing lessons learned and best practices.
- Consider the ethical implications of digital technologies in development, such as data privacy and algorithmic bias.
DURATION AND PROGRAM
This is a structured training course designed to provide a broad understanding of the strategic application of ICTs for sustainable development. The program will combine theoretical discussions with case studies, real-world examples, and interactive sessions. While it will cover various digital tools, the focus is on their strategic relevance and impact rather than deep technical coding. The detailed program schedule, including specific session timings and learning activities, will be communicated upon registration.
TARGET PARTICIPANTS
This course is ideal for professionals, policymakers, project managers, and researchers across various sectors involved in sustainable development. It is particularly beneficial for:
- Development Practitioners and Program Managers (NGOs, international organizations)
- Government Officials in ministries of planning, technology, environment, health, and education
- Urban Planners and Smart City Developers
- Environmental Managers and Climate Change Specialists
- Community Leaders and Social Innovators
- Researchers and Academics in development studies, ICT4D, and sustainability
- Private Sector Professionals involved in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and digital transformation
- Students in development studies, public policy, and related fields.

The modules will be taught through PowerPoint presentations, and lectures and will include a case study/field visit, breakout sessions, case studies and other interactive discussion components.
The course will also include a few guest speakers, both in person and via Zoom and other online learning platforms for overseas speakers. This provides useful real-world insights alongside the more theoretical aspects of the course.
The conference faculty shall consist of experienced decision makers, as well as practitioners and representatives from established educational and research institutions active around climate change, engineering and international development. Throughout the course, theoretical presentation of concepts will be moderated and more group discussions and plenary engagements will be optimized. PowerPoint presentations will be made by facilitators and resource persons, to highlight key concepts before embarking on group work.
