Capacity Building for Safer Roads: ECAS Hosts Regional Training for Transport Professionals
From 23rd September to 2nd October 2024, ECAS Institute hosted a specialized training in Nairobi, Kenya, on Safety, Driving, and Traffic Management for drivers, transport managers, and logistics practitioners. The program brought together participants from the Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) for a comprehensive and practical learning experience aimed at improving transport safety and efficiency in infrastructure development settings.
The training was designed to address real-world challenges in transport and logistics, with modules such as Developing Safety Plans for Drivers, Safe Driving at Construction Sites, Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification, and an Introduction to Environment, Climate Change, and Sustainability in Infrastructure Development. These sessions provided both foundational and advanced knowledge tailored to enhance the participants’ capacity in safety planning, operational risk management, and sustainable transport solutions.
A key highlight of the program was a field visit to the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The visit gave trainees first-hand exposure to large-scale road construction processes, vehicle operation procedures, and strategies for managing drivers in high-risk work zones. This practical experience was crucial in bridging the gap between theory and application, offering insights into international best practices in road safety and infrastructure operations. For many participants, it was an eye-opening opportunity to witness how structured systems and safety protocols are implemented on the ground.
To unwind after a day of technical immersion, participants were treated to a traditional nyama choma meal—Kenya’s iconic grilled meat delicacy. This social moment allowed for informal networking, cultural exchange, and reflection on the learning experience.
Another standout component of the training was an experiential learning tour across Nairobi City, where participants explored various elements of the city’s transportation infrastructure. From road networks and urban traffic flow to public transport systems and modern rail facilities, the tour was crafted to help participants observe and analyze how infrastructure functions in an active urban environment. The hands-on exploration allowed them to link theoretical discussions with real-world applications and challenges.
The training concluded with a closing ceremony, during which participants were awarded certificates of completion. The ceremony celebrated their commitment, participation, and shared vision for improving road safety and transport systems in their respective countries. Facilitators emphasized the importance of continuous learning, regional collaboration, and applying these lessons to strengthen institutional practices.
Through this intensive and engaging program, ECAS Institute reinforced its role in building regional capacity for safer, more efficient, and environmentally conscious transportation systems.
