CONCEPT NOTE
INTERNATIONAL TRAINING ON INTRODUCTION TO WASTE AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY
COURSE BACKGROUND
Waste generation and resource depletion have become urgent global challenges, leading to environmental degradation, pollution, and climate change. The traditional linear economic model—based on “take, make, dispose” consumption patterns—has proven unsustainable, causing excessive waste accumulation, loss of valuable resources, and severe environmental impacts. The circular economy presents an innovative solution by promoting resource efficiency, waste minimization, recycling, and regeneration of materials to create a sustainable economic system.
This course, offered by the Environmental Capacities and Sustainability (ECAS) Institute, provides a comprehensive introduction to waste management and circular economy principles. It explores waste prevention strategies, material recovery innovations, sustainable production methods, waste-to-energy solutions, and regulatory frameworks shaping the transition to a circular economy. The course also highlights business models, industrial symbiosis, and extended producer responsibility (EPR), empowering participants to drive sustainable change in various sectors.
With governments, industries, and organizations increasingly adopting zero-waste policies and circular economy initiatives, professionals and businesses must develop innovative solutions to resource efficiency and waste reduction. This course equips participants with the knowledge, tools, and best practices needed to implement circular economy strategies, influence policies, and create sustainable business models that benefit both the environment and the economy.
COURSE OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand waste management challenges and circular economy principles.
- Identify effective waste reduction and recycling strategies.
- Explore waste-to-resource opportunities and upcycling innovations.
- Examine circular business models and sustainable production techniques.
- Learn about energy recovery from waste and industrial symbiosis.
- Analyze policy frameworks, regulations, and incentives supporting circular practices.
- Develop strategies for corporate sustainability and extended producer responsibility (EPR).
- Gain insights into successful circular economy initiatives and case studies.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

DURATION AND PROGRAM
TARGET PARTICIPANTS
This course is designed for environmental professionals, sustainability managers, policymakers, waste management practitioners, business leaders, researchers, and students interested in sustainable waste management and circular economy principles. It is also valuable for entrepreneurs and industry professionals looking to integrate circular economy models into their businesses.
The course is beneficial for municipal leaders, NGOs, investors, and development organizations involved in waste management projects, sustainable urban planning, and circular innovation initiatives.
TRAINING STYLE
The training will be highly interactive and practice-oriented, combining expert-led lectures, case studies, and hands-on exercises to provide participants with a deep understanding of waste management and circular economy principles. Engaging group discussions and panel sessions with industry experts, policymakers, and sustainability leaders will offer real-world insights and perspectives. Participants will take part in practical workshops and hands-on activities, such as designing circular business models, waste reduction strategies, and sustainable product solutions.
To enhance practical learning, group projects and problem-solving exercises will encourage participants to develop actionable waste management and circular economy strategies tailored to their industries or communities. Where possible, site visits to recycling plants, waste processing facilities, or circular economy initiatives will provide firsthand exposure to best practices in sustainable resource management. This dynamic training approach ensures that participants gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to implement circular economy solutions effectively.
